Art Encyclopedia – Techniques & Symbols by Giuseppe Di Martino

In my work, I employ various painting techniques and materials, each of which has a unique effect. Here's a brief explanation of the key terms:

Spatula technique
With this technique, I apply the paint to the canvas with a palette knife. This creates layers, reliefs, and textures that add depth and dynamism. Every movement remains visible—a dialogue between material and artist.

Acrylic painting
Acrylic paints dry quickly and produce bold, intense colors. They can be used both opaquely and translucently and are ideal for large-format works, which are the ones I usually paint.

oil painting
Oil paints dry significantly slower than acrylics, allowing for longer work on details and smooth transitions. They possess a special depth of color and luminosity that lends many paintings an almost timeless effect.

mixed media
I combine acrylic paints, oil paints, and other materials such as pastes, sand, or metallic pigments, creating works with exciting surfaces and multifaceted expressiveness.

canvas
Canvas is my central medium. Depending on its structure, weave, and primer, it influences the character of the painting. I deliberately choose different canvases to achieve the desired effect.

Structural paste
Texture pastes allow surfaces to be given a relief effect. They create three-dimensional effects that reflect light differently—an important element in my filler work.

symbolism
In many of my works, I work with symbols and archetypal forms. They open up a level beyond the purely visible and invite viewers to discover their own meanings and associations.

Large formats
Many of my works are designed in large formats (e.g., 100 × 100 cm or larger). They exert a strong presence in the space and invite viewers to immerse themselves in the visual world.
